Leave Work Early Text: What to Send Your Manager

A text should be even shorter than an email. Here are three ready-to-send texts for telling your manager you need to leave early — and when a quick text is the right call.

A text works best when you already have an informal relationship with your manager, or when you need to reach them quickly and they’re away from their desk. Keep it to one or two lines: the time you’ll leave, a short reason, and a note that your work is handled.

Three text examples

Neutral

“Hi [Manager], I need to leave by [time] today for a personal matter. My tasks are on track and I’ll finish anything urgent first.”

Friendly

“Hey [Manager], I’ll need to slip out around [time] today — quick personal thing. All my key items are covered. Thanks!”

Short notice · apologetic

“Hi [Manager], sorry for the late notice — I have to leave by [time] today. I’ll wrap up what’s time-sensitive and follow up on the rest.”

When a text is the right choice

Use a text for speed, or on informal teams where quick messages are normal. Choose email or chat when a written record matters, when the message is more detailed, or when your manager simply prefers it. If your workplace has a formal time-off process, follow that instead of a text.

Common questions

Is it unprofessional to text my manager?

Not if it fits your workplace. On teams that already use texting or chat casually, a short, respectful text is fine. When in doubt, use the channel your manager prefers.

How short should the text be?

One or two sentences: when you’re leaving, a brief reason, and a line that your work is covered.
